The demand for lithium, essential for electric vehicles, is expected to face twenty years of rapid growth, according to our new report.
The Oregon Group forecasts lithium’s dominant demand segment — electric batteries and vehicles (EVs) — is also it’s fastest growing, a dynamic rarely encountered even in bull markets.
Our report — “Inside the accelerating global race for lithium” — examines how the lithium market has seen a significant price correction in 2023, stalling new lithium projects and limiting supply expansion needed to meet the expected increase in demand for the next generation of EVs. Price volatility is also compounded by global geopolitical tensions, local community environmental concerns, as well as government permitting issues.
Established lithium producers face a unique set of challenges that offers an opportunity for new jurisdictions, particularly, in Africa.

While I will not have time to fully read the report till later tonight, I did glance at it. This caught my eye, and its wording like this that has caused a confusion in the retail investor community.
“EV batteries are large and flammable”
Not the flammable part, but it would be nice for reports to include context when referencing that aspect. For example, specifying that it's the highly volatile electrolyte and citing studies on EV accidents, which show that only a small percentage of fires originate with the battery. However, the misconception arises because it's not just an EV battery but rather an EV battery pack. This has led many people to think of it like an Internal Combustion Engine Vehicle (ICEV), imagining one large battery instead of a pack made up of thousands of smaller cells. I recently had to explain this fact because most people don't realize that even some consumer electronics use the same NCM 18650 cells found in EVs.
